I've been on a *mostly* 90's Alt-Country kick over the last couple weeks, which led to this 229 track (and counting) playlist. I tried not to double up artists unless there were separate song-writers in the band (IE: Uncle Tupelo). Not all the artists here would be considered "Alt-Country" but I think these all fit (there might be a few strays). This is a work in progress, as I'm still adding to it. If you are up for it take a look at the playlist and feel free to recommend any artist or track I may have missed. I'm especially looking for tracks by artists who aren't associated with the genre. Much like Frank Black's wonderful duet with Marty Brown, "Dirty Old Town".

Happy Listening!

If you lived through the 90's, this word probably has a very specific meaning for you. It was inescapable to be sure. You probably either embraced it or you hated it. I think it gets a bit of bad rap amongst music snobs. There were certainly some artists that cashed in on the phenomenon, but there were also some really great acts. The fact that some of these really great acts made boatloads of money, probably rubbed some people the wrong way. I know I got tired of a lot of these bands. Recentely, I decided to revisit some of these albums, and I found myself enjoying the music way more than I expected. I decided to make and share this playlist. Hopefully you already own or are at least familiar with the genre defining Singles Soundtrack. This playlist works as a nice companion piece. Many of the same artists but none of the same songs.
Happy listening!

Honestly, I just think it's some kind of weird magic that this space still exists. Well, the reason I'm here is because I decided to make a master playlist of my Xmas Redux comps over on Spotify. Of course they didn't have all of my selections, but I was impressed with the amount of songs that were available. All told, it's up to 8+ hours of Christmas Cheer. If you'd like to give it a go, here ya go:

Maximum Jackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13649652331343272119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284587915749734112.post-48791799757319268712020-12-25T11:52:00.000-08:002020-12-25T11:52:22.860-08:00 Millennial Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the Third Psychedelic Era, 1996-2015

What if Rhino put together a fourth Nuggets Box Set? About 5 years ago, I put four playlists together on my iTunes library using that very concept. These most likely would have shown up on this very blog, had I still been actively blogging at the time. A recent thread in a Facebook group I frequent, reminded that I had tackled this, so I decided to see if I could recreate those playlists on Spotify. Turns out, pretty much most of what I picked was available on there. A few were missing and I had to swap tracks for certain artists, but I was pleasantly surprised. I put it all on one playlist on Spot. 107 tracks and a little over 5 hours worth. I will probaly continute to add to this playlist but if you'd like to listen to what I have so far . . .

Hello folks, not sure if anybody cares, but I thought I'd start sharing playlists again. I've finally decided to give Spotify a go after years of shying away from it. Format will be the same, all of my playlists will still fit onto an 80-minute CDR, you just won't be able to download them. I am at the mercy of what is available on Spotify, so that compromises my choices a little, but it also forces me to be a little more creative.

My first two playlists are up and running. I've labeled them Proto Power Pop and Proto Power Pop V.2, but they are essentially one big document of the music that I think might have inspired some of our favorite Power Poppers later. I posted an early version of the first playlist in the "I Love Power Pop" Facebook group and got some great feedback. Lots of great suggestions for choice of songs and artists. In fact, I had so many great suggestions that I had to make a second playlist.
I guess I kinda kept everyone hanging, but as you probably surmised, this blog is now officially dead. I continue to make comps, but due to the problems with file sharing sites, this has become too much of a burden for me. I'll let the url live on, but I will not be making any more updates, nor will I post new links for comps. Thanks for reading.

Cheers,
From the Kickstarter website:

Dear BEAUTIFUL NOISE Backers:

We crossed the funding goal with 3 days to go thanks to every one of you awesome backers! Thank you so much, you have made this project a reality, after 8 years of hard work and dedication this movie is going to be released!

But wait, there's more! We still need your involvement. When coming up with our goal we calculated the minimum amount we needed to get the film released. Now that we have made it to that amount, we could definitely use more funds to pay for additional songs, footage, for post production sweetening and manufacturing costs that will enhance the final film.

So stay tuned and stay involved. Only 3 days left to be a part of this campaign. Please keep spreading the word: http://kck.st/RX9lFK

Best,

Eric, Sarah & the 'Beautiful Noise' team.

This is great news! Can't wait to see it.

I also stumbled upon this Fantastic compilation yesterday and thought I'd share it with you. It is a nice companion piece to my Shoegaze Primer: Obscure Shoegaze Vol. 1 Complied by Ursula 1000

Track list:

"Love Sick" by Fury Things (Cheree Records 1990)
"Shy Me" by Nature Things (Action Records 1991)
"Change You Leaving" by Feral (Lust Recordings 1991)
"Mirrored" by Drop (Chapter 22 1991)
"Slyde" by Blair 1523 (Wilde Club Records 1992)
"Sunriser" by That Uncertain Feeling (Dead Dead Good 1991)
"Something Sonic" by Beautiful Happiness (Cheree 1990)
"Who's" by The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa (Ecstasy Release 1991)
"Ride" by The Lavender Faction (Lust Recordings 1990)
"Need To Be" by Headtime (Cherry Red 1991)
"Saints & Razors" by Aenone (kokopop 1993)
"Jealousy Comes To The Rescue" by Flood (Quarry 1991)
"Space Ship" by The Suncharms (Wilde Club Records 1991)
"Give Her Tomorrow" by The Waiting Sound (Engergy-Vent 1990)
"Sugar I Swear" by Whipping Boy (Cheree 1990)

If you download it from SoundCloud, it is just one big mp3 (nearly and hour long). I'll be honest, I'd never heard any of these songs before I downloaded it. In fact, the only artist that I was familiar, was Flood-- and I only know him due to his production credits. Don't let that discourage you from giving this a listen, there is not a weak track in the bunch!
Hey Folks,

First of all, I'm aware that Mediafire has taken down some of my public links. I will upload the Christmas Redux series some time this week. I'm not sure if MF has taken down any of my other links, if so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. We shall see. As far as I know, the Divshare links are still okay-- if not, let me know, thanks.

I do have a new compilation for you today. I was not planning this, but I thought I would do my part to help spread the word about a great new Shoegaze documentary that desperately needs our help. Please watch the trailer below:

If you are fan of Shoegaze (or guitar) music at all, please consider making a donation. More info here: Beautiful Noise Documentary. There's a little less than a week to go, and those DVD's would make great stocking stuffers!

In the meantime, feel free to download my 20-track Shoegaze primer. Not sure if all the artists I've used are featured in the film, but I feel like this is a pretty good representation of the British Shoegaze scene of the late 80's/early 90's. Happy listening!
We've made it to November, which means we get to celebrate some songs that are a quarter of a century old here at Burn and Shine. This is the fourth such compilation that I've shared, and if you are interested in the others click on these links: 1986, 1985 and 1984.

Not much to say about 1987, but I will mention that the brilliant comedy, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, came out that year and it is far and away the greatest Thanksgiving movie ever. Be sure and watch it again some time this month.
Hey Folks, it's that time of year again. As some of you know, I kicked off this blog with a Halloween compilation back in 2008, so I've been blogging for five years now. Not sure how much longer I'll keep going, but I'm pretty sure I had no idea back in '08 that I'd still be doing this in 2012. Please keep checking in here-- especially over the next three months, as I will be posting more Burn and Shine comps.

As for this year's volume of Candy Apples & Razor Blades, I think it's a peach. Book ended by two versions of Daniel Johnston's haunting "Devil Town" I hope you'll enjoy it.
Hey Folks,

Well I've been on a lengthy hiatus, but that doesn't mean this blog is dead. I'm still having computer issues, so posting compilations here has been low on the priority list. I plan on resuming my normal Fall/Winter schedule, with Vol. 5 in the Candy Apples & Razor Blades series in October, a 1987 comp in November, Christmas Redux Vol. 7 in December and, of course, a best of 2012 playlist in January-- so please stay tuned!

As for today, I've been on a huge Barbara Manning kick. Since it seems that she is not quite as well known as she should be, I thought I'd put together a Barbara Manning primer. If you are a fan of her work, then please help me spread the word by inviting your friends to download this comp! If you are unfamiliar with BM, then you are in for a treat. This comp concentrates on the beginning of her career, 1985-1997. Featuring her work with the legendary 28th Day, World of Pooh, SF Seals, and her solo stuff.

I found a great article online from a few years ago via the San Francisco Chronicle that gives a great overview of her career. If you'd like to find out more about Manning, please click on that handy link.

Here's the Compilation, pretty much in chronological order. Happy Listening!

By the way, probably the best known/loved song by 28th Day is "25 Pills". I decided to leave it off this compilation, because Manning is featured as a the back-up singer. Still, it's great, and if you haven't heard it, check out the youtube clip below:
It seems that even among my biggest music geek friends, very few are aware of the wealth of great music that came from New Zealand starting in the late 70's and continuing to this day.

One of the most important of these acts were The Clean from Dunedin. Nine years ago, Merge Records put out an amazing two-disc compilatition simply titled Anthology. Not only is this collection essential, it is very much still in print and readily available. I urge you to head over to the Merge Records Online Store and pick up a copy-- you won't be sorry.

Below, I have put together a 25-song companion disc, which culls tracks from The Clean's five albums since 1990. The Anthology I mentioned above, covers the first three of these albums, but I tried to avoid overlap (there is one track on both).

The Clean are playing a handful of dates here in the U.S. this Spring:

May
30 Los Angeles CA The Echo
June
2 Austin TX Chaos in Tejas - Club De Ville
4 Allston MA Brighton Music Hall w/ Times New Viking
5 New York NY Le Poisson Rouge w/ Times New Viking
6 Philadelphia PA Johnny Brenda's w/ Times New Viking
7 Washington DC Rock & Roll Hotel w/ Times New Viking
8 Chapel HillLocal 506 w/ Times New Viking

I'll be at the Chapel Hill show!

Happy listening.

Excerpts from The Clean: 1990-2009

01. I have been having issues with my laptop. This morning it suddenly sprang to life. I've gotten several emails and comments regarding dead megaupload links. I am in the process of fixing those. Just this morning I put up new links for the first three Halloween comps, 1984, Tennessee Power Pop, the first three Rebellious Jukebox comps, and Power Pop Explosion #3 and #4. Not sure how many more are dead, so if you run across one that isn't working let me know. Thanks!Maximum Jackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13649652331343272119noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284587915749734112.post-65410600668132742662012-02-23T17:33:00.006-08:002012-02-26T20:55:02.368-08:00American Jangle Pop.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 253px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXO04HOvgoS7K5chFcRYzFu8jTmo_I5iTb7Vk-vzDM9ddshdaCIA58wwTgH6oBJ2ZtoryrIm9o-Id5Seise5we3yGyEpif4fYIq-Mg5N4E0eYfWrTHh9hVEQXmtxc9lBdwev923SbSJxd7/s320/rickenbacker1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712509491881816258" />

Hello folks,

Long time since I posted a compilation. A few things have happened since Christmas that have kept me from blogging. First of all, the response to my end of year compilation has been off the charts! I can't remember another non-Power Pop compilation getting downloaded as much as this one has. I didn't want to step on that particular compilation's momentum. Second, the death of Megaupload had me worried for awhile there. Some of my previous comps were uploaded to that site, so if you are looking for those, just let me know and I will reup. Third, my laptop is finally showing it's age. Doing these comps is pretty time consuming, and it's even worse when the laptop is acting up. Which means, my Mega-Celebration of 1977 may have to be put on hold for awhile. Not sure anyone cared anyway as I got exactly zero comments regarding that particular series.

So what's this new comp all about? I recently stumbled upon two long lost (to me) gems via youtube, both from around 1990. First, was my favorite song by Better Than Ezra from their first, cassette-only release. Second, was a song by a Newport, Rhode Island band called the Philtres. With the help of a great new-to-me blog, I Hate the 90s, I was able to get the Better Than Ezra song (and the entire cassette!). As for the Philtres' track, well, I emailed the person who upped their video on Youtube and got a quick and polite response as well as a nifty little mp3 of their, should've been a hit, "Friday"! Even got permission from Pat Cottrell (who penned the song) to share it here. Those two songs instantly take me back to 1990.

At the time Jangle Pop seemed to be getting its due. Little did I know that this was really the last gasp for these kinds of bands. Many of the artists I've used to represent this era had better, more important records earlier in their career, but that is not the point. I loved all these songs then, and now.

Happy Listening!

The Last Gasp: American Jangle Pop 1988-1992

01. This year I squeezed 30 songs onto my year-end compilation. I did so by fudging it a bit. My #1, very favorite song of the year did not make the cut. The brilliant "Johnny Kwango" by the Bevis Frond is just over five minutes long, and I decided to put the nearly equally as awesome "More To This Than That" (it clocks in at 1:45!) on here so I could share a few more tracks from a great year. "Johnny Kwango" is featured in video form at the end of this post, if you'd like to hear it. I uploaded the clip to Youtube because nobody else had-- sorry for the intermittent zoom effect, I'm a complete novice when it comes to videos.

Because I've noticed that the number of Downloads is inversely proportional to the length of my blog post, I won't say much else about this compilation or the year in music except there were so many great releases this year, that I toyed with putting together two more comps. Maybe at some point those will make an appearance along with a list of my Favorite Albums of 2011. Enough babbling.

Happy Listening!

Burn and Shine's Top 30 of 2011:

01. The Bevis Frond, "More To This Than That"
02. I've noticed that last year's Christmas post has been getting a lot of hits lately, so maybe everyone is ready to start listening to Christmas music. If you are new to this blog, and are looking for Christmas tunes, be sure and click the "Xmas" tag at the end of this post and check out the five previous volumes in this series.

I also wanted to give everyone the heads up on what's in store here at Burn and Shine over the next few months. Sometime around Christmas Day, I will post my favorite tracks from 2011. In January, I've got something really special planned. Check out this video:

I must admit, when I put that video together I was thinking that I was going to start my 1977 series in January. Instead, I have decided to finally post my Proto-Punk series first. So look for Sunday Punks to start in January-- it's going to be massive! For now though, enjoy the Christmas tunes.

Happy Listening!

Christmas Redux Six:

01. Aztec Camera, "Walk Out to Winter"
02. It is also the year I went to boot camp, had my heart broken by the New York Mets and bought my first car (how I miss you VW Golf!). By the next year, I would be out in sunny San Diego, in a land of great radio. 91X in San Diego was where I heard a lot of the bands represented here for the first time. Just got the fabulous anthology which Bar None Records has so lovingly put out. Read all about it here: Human Switchboard.

I went looking for the title track on YouTube, but only found a live version. I decided to upload my first video to that site ever. Here's hoping I don't get taken down by the internet police. It's a pretty basic still shot video, but at least you get to hear the song, which by the way, is not the remastered version but rather a vinyl transfer I found on the interweb a few months ago. Enjoy!

Maximum Jackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13649652331343272119noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1284587915749734112.post-5872931248354087302011-11-11T07:18:00.000-08:002011-11-11T07:37:22.203-08:00Eleventh Dream Day!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 238px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJYRWTCy07Mo6V4fmbEpne2cxUah1qclzco-FymHWSxex5eDRkOdxgN7DIre0aVk2uYGUvhLRPz0y6m_YUbx7PBTmM5xmr84DndFaU_w1WIhuHwkTcEjqGgwVzofecEBAMYFOGrZghjEZq/s320/11dreamday-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5673762695864113442" />

Congratulations to all the babies who have been or will be born later today. As you can see from that handy link, I'm a little late to the party: apparently there was an actual party in NYC celebrating the book's birthday. Not knowing about this event, I decided to reread Our Band a few weeks ago. I flipped to the copyright date page, and realized it had been nearly a decade since I first read it (I'm pretty sure I read it in '02 or '03). As I made my way through, I thought I needed to do some sort of tribute to the book here at Burn and Shine.

I decided to make a companion compilation. The NPR article I posted above mentions that the book "was all about these obscure rock bands from 30 years ago". Having lived through this period, I don't really think of any of those bands as "obscure". I don't claim to have been riding this wave from the beginning, but I remember Black Flag playing Chattanooga, even if I was too lame to have gone. Then it hit me: 30 cussing years! When I was just getting into these bands in the mid/late 80's, I knew very little about the popular music of the 50's let alone, the stuff that was bubbling under the mainstream. So there is a generation of potential rock geeks out there who may not have ever heard any of these bands. Well I've got you covered!

I'm pretty sure all of the artists featured in the book have appeared on previous Burn and Shine compilations (one of these days I'm going to catalog all the songs/artists I've used in this here blog, but till then, I'll just have to rely on my increasingly unreliable memory). So instead of talking about the tracks I've selected, let me give you a list for further investigation for each band featured in the book.

Black Flag (Los Angeles): Kind of tricky, there is not one definitive album to recommend as the Flag had several lead singers and went through some distinct artistic phases. Start with the fabulous Pre-Henry Rollins compilation The First Four Years. Then of course you need Damaged, and finally My War.

Minutemen (San Pedro): Double Nickels on the Dime (1984), but if you like this, you're going to want everything.

Mission of Burma (Boston): Signals, Calls and Marches EP (1981). Both the Ryko and Matador versions of this add the totally essential "Academy Fight Song" single, for that reason it gets the slight nod over 1982's, Vs, the only studio long player released during their initial lifespan of 1980-83 (MoB have since regrouped and put out a handful of good to great albums).

Minor Threat (Washington D.C.): Finally an easy one! All you need (and all they recorded) is nicely compiled on Complete Discography.

Hüsker Dü (Minneapolis): Okay, I'll go with 1984's Zen Arcade, but really you cannot go wrong with pre-Warner's Dü (and I stand by their major label albums too).

The Replacements (Minneapolis): Sticking with the 1984 theme, start with Let It Be. Though few bands have recorded three back-to-back albums as brilliant as Let it Be, Tim and Pleased to Meet Me (the latter two on a *shudders* major label).

Sonic Youth (New York): The longest continually running band featured in the book, Sonic Youth also has the most daunting discography. Start with Daydream Nation (1988). Then if you like the noisy parts go backwards to their indie releases, or if you like the more pop-like tracks go forward toward their Geffen output.

Butthole Surfers (San Antonio): My personal fave is Rebrandt Pussyhorse (1986).

Big Black (Chicago): Another easy one, The Rich Man's Eight Track Tape (1987) as it compiles all of the essential Big Black Recordings on one handy disc.

Dinosaur Jr. (Boston): My favorite album is You're Living All Over Me (1987), but a great starting point would be Ear Bleeding Country: The Best of Dinosaur Jr., released by Rhino in 2001 shortly before the reunion shows and subsequent albums. I rarely suggest starting with a best-of compilation, but this one compiles songs from their indie releases and the cream of their major label output as well as some important non-album singles.

Fugazi (Washington D.C.): 13 Songs (1990) was my introduction to the mighty Fugazi, and it's still my favorite. It includes their first two EPs, and for my money Fugazi was never better. Repeater and Steady Diet were pretty great too, but after that they got a little too post-rock for my taste.

Mudhoney (Seattle): My favorite of the Seatle bands. If you already know "Touch Me I'm Sick" (featured on my compilation below), then jump on over to their last album released on Sub Pop, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge (1991)-- the perfect blend of grunge and pop.

Beat Happening (Olympia): Hmmmm . . . One of these bands is not like the others. That would be the quirky Beat Happening. I've heard plenty of people scoff at the fact that BH were included in this book. I would venture to say that no other band on this list puts a smile on my face quite like Beat Happening. Sure, Johnson's booming baritone is an acquired taste, and Heather Lewis's voice isn't always on key, but damn put them together . . . and it just knocks my socks off. If you are a fan of twee, but don't know this band, then go ahead and indulge in the Crashing Through box set (2001) which compiles just about every note recorded by Beat Happening-- you'll thank me later. If you are new to this sound, then start with the pop-perfection of Jamboree (1988). If that record doesn't do anything for you, then there is no need for further investigation.

Alright, on to today's comp. I've sequenced the comp in the same order that they appear in the book. The only band that is featured here that does not have a chapter in OBCBYL is Ian MacKaye's pre-Minor Threat band, the Teen Idles. When an artist had multiple singers, I tried to include an example of each. Some of the bands only had one singer, but I made sure and gave everyone at least two tracks as it didn't seem fair.

Happy Listening!

Our Band Could Be Your Life: The Soundtrack

01.
